More Corner Residents Work to Slow Their Street Traffic!
Last summer, Hersey Street residents, led by FWC board member, Kellan Simpson, tapped into their creative community energy and built and installed traffic calming planters. The cut-through traffic on their street was so plentiful and fast that the residents nick-named their street "Hersey Highway". By placing four 5 x 2 foot planters about 5 feet from the edge of their street, the equivalent of a parked car, the motorists had to slow down, thus improving safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.
This summer, as part of the major water-sewer overflow project, the City is rebuilding Hersey Street so there's no room for the planters. A Mackworth Street neighbor, Mary Cuellar, asked if her street could use the 4 planters instead. Mary and another neighbor, Ann Adams, petitioned other Mackworth Street neighbors and determined enthusiastic interest in the project. With some financial support from other neighbors they purchased and planted beautiful flowers, herbs and vegetables and spread the planters all along the street.
Many neighbors and motorists have asked about the planters and most appreciate the concept and impact. In addition to calming the car traffic, the planters signal that Mackworth St is a special place, not just a road to be sped through.
If you're interested in this strategy for your Woodfords Corner Street, please reach out to FWC and we can provide details on the process.
Thank you Mary and Ann for leading the way to a safer Mackworth Street!
