Green, Clean and Sustainable Woodfords Corner
SPRING is upon us and what better time to raise awareness about Friends of Woodfords Corner (FWC) Green & Clean Team! This month, we asked our board member Vonnett Seeger to share why she devotes so much to FWC’s Clean & Green initiatives.
Hi All, my name is Vonnett Seeger and I too am a Woodfords Corner resident. I am also a Board Member for FWC (4 years) and a Green & Clean Team member! I have lived in the neighborhood for 10 years and am a parent of an elementary school-aged daughter. I share this with you, as it helps to set the stage for the many reasons I volunteer my time and have a vested interest in Woodfords Corner! It is MY community, MY home, and MY family. I am teaching my family and daughter about coming together with neighbors to positively impact our hub, beautifying the corner, and adopting sustainable behaviors.
My favorite memory is of the first time I was invited by a neighbor to help with Spring clean-up at Trinity Park. That was 5 years ago and my daughter was only 4. She came along and helped with trash pick-up in the park. That same year, we walked the neighborhood, posting flyers for FWC events and connecting with neighbors. I cherish the added bond this created for us and demonstrates the type of engagement I want her to embrace.
In the last 2 years, FWC added stunning planters to Deering Ave. It too became a family affair. My husband helped cut the barrels that would become adorned with flowering native plants. I often enlisted their help with the well-orchestrated watering routine. This brings me to the topic of sustainability. This past year rain barrels were installed, GREATLY reducing our water usage! It was more successful and beneficial than I could have possibly imagined. Little by little, we are taking steps to demonstrate ways that we can do our part in reducing our footprint!
I have more ideas that I hope to share with you all in the upcoming months about other ways we all can learn to reduce, reuse and recycle. Want to know more?
