Beautifying the Corner with Crosswalk Murals
Our Active Transportation Team has been hard at work this spring with new projects. Some of you may recall a handful of elusive Instagram Polls back in April—the results from those were used in designing four crosswalk murals on Deering Avenue. Our designs were officially accepted by the Public Art Committee on Friday, June 17th, which means installation will happen in the very near future!
Designed by our Graduate Assistant, Meghan Kirschbaum, the designs are abstract in nature and inviting for all who walk/bike/drive the Corner. The designs were inspired by sidewalk chalk which is an inclusive medium that creates community involvement. Sidewalk chalk is loved by children and career artists alike, making it the perfect jumping off point for an art installation aimed at building our community hub. Both the color palette and design style were voted on by ~170 of our Instagram followers.
As noted by Public Art panelist, Austen Torres Davis, the imagery and color palette pay homage to Portland’s working waterfront and Casco Bay as whole, which shapes our communities regardless of how close we live to the shore.
Below is our design “package”—if you would like to get help out with the installation (date TBD) please email volunteer@woodfordscorner.org with the subject “Crosswalk Murals”.
