Bittersweet Farewell to Backyard Blooms

Written by Backyard Blooms owners Jason and Kate

It has been a joy growing flowers for our community over the past 7 years. We have learned a ton about what it takes to grow healthy flowers and foliage, produce beautiful bouquets and arrangements, and run a flower farm in the heart of a city while running a small business that reached enthusiastic followers across our country and beyond! We have been supported by wonderful customers like you who followed our journey, stopped by our flower stand, ordered our tubers, shopped our holiday markets, trusted us with your weddings, joined us for our workshops, signed up for our seasonal Flower CSAs, and kept us busy with special orders throughout our growing seasons!

And wow, we have kept busy! What started as a side hustle business became a full time operation and what we hoped would be *some* of our time spent in the flower gardens has become ALL of our time. Turns out, you can’t farm as a part time gig! (Shoutout to all our hard working farming friends!!!) We have also found that growing flowers on a larger scale has taken us away from friends and loved ones during the most magical time in Maine-the short sweet summer. To that end, we have decided that 2024 will be our last full season of growing at Backyard Blooms! We feel really proud of everything we have built and grown together! And although this is bittersweet to share with you all, it’s mostly sweet! We leave this venture to do more of what we love in a way that we will find joy and fulfillment! Kate will continue doing freelance local floristry and design, which is her real passion (more to come on that stay with this account!) and Jason will always grow flowers, his real passion, but on a smaller, more intimate scale. We will always be incredibly grateful for all our loyal customers who have made this dream project such a success. We are also incredibly excited about what is next for both of us and we will always hold what we take from this experience closest to our hearts, a friendship, that became business partners, that became family.

Please know this is not a hard stop! We have 800 dahlia plants to dig up, divide, and store, and we will hold our big dahlia tuber sale in March 2025… there will be so many amazing varieties to offer! And, we have thousands of tulip bulbs going in the ground this fall, so we will finish our journey with Backyard Blooms how it started it… with tulips! We will have spring blooms and our epic Mother’s Day sale in spring 2025! And then we will officially say goodbye!

So thank you again for a wonderful season and an amazing 7 years! We couldn’t have done it without you! We can’t wait for you to stay with us through spring 2025 and then we’ll see what happens next…

With lots of love and gratitude from the bottom of our little flowering hearts,

💗Kate + Jason
