Neighbors Calming Traffic: Hersey Street Planters

This summer, FWC collaborated with Portland Trails, the City of Portland, and the residents of Hersey street for a new type of traffic calming demonstration project. The project involved the installation of 4 large wooden planters along the sides of the street. In addition to slowing traffic, the project was designed as a "placemaking" project to show the street as a place for people and not just speeding vehicles. By converting grey space to green space, the project also provided plants for local pollinators and aided in stormwater retention. If your street has any interest in a demonstration project of your own, please reach out to FWC and we can provide details on the process.  If you are interested in learning how these neighbors accomplished this project, contact Active Transportation Committee Member Kellan at kmsimp1@gmail.com. Thank you Kellan for your leadership!
