The City of Portland will begin rehabilitating sewer pipes on several streets in the Back Cove Neighborhood beginning the week of February 8th. Recent inspections found issues that need to be addressed to prevent the pipes from failing. No digging is required as the work involves placing a resin liner in the pipes, inflating it, and using an ultraviolet light to harden the resin which results in a new, structurally sound pipe.

Again, while no digging is involved, the sewer pipes on affected streets will be blocked for a couple of hours during the day while the liner is cured. Affected residents can still flush toilets and use water, but the City is asking that affected residents limit intensive water use such as showering or doing the laundry. While the work is being done, signage will be placed on the end of an affected street indicating no through traffic and street parking will be limited.

The City will be sending notices to the specific affected residences, along with an expected schedule of work, which will be weather dependent. The affected streets with expected duration of work are as follows: Pya St., 4 days; George St., 3 days; Austin St., 2 days; Parsons St., 5 days; and Chenery St., 5 days.

For more information about the remediation, visit http://portlandmaine.gov/2695/Sewer-Rehabilitation or an affected resident can e-mail Benjamin Pearson at bnp@portlandmaine.gov with questions or concerns. Again, the City will be sending more specific information to affected residents.
