Deering Ave Crosswalk Murals: Thank You Volunteers, Portland Bike Party, and ATC Committee!
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers, Portland Bike Party, the Empanada Club, and our Active Transportation Committee for making our neighborhood beautiful, and throwing a party while you were at it! We’re also grateful to the local businesses and neighbors who joined us for this fun day. Bird & Co has graciously sponsored this event for 3 years in a row!
As part of our efforts to make Woodfords Corner safe and walkable, FWC Active Transportation Committee replicated the design from the last 2 years on the first block of Deering Ave. Asphalt art signals drivers to slow down by creating a visual impression that this is a different kind of intersection. Designed by our 2021-2023 Muskie Graduate Assistant Meghan Kirschbaum, the design offers whimsy to a busy and block that has many businesses and pedestrians. At the end of our installation, more than a hundred cyclists from the Portland Bike Party stopped along the block and danced for 40 minutes! With attention to the traffic, pedestrians, and businesses along the block, this event demonstrates how we can enliven the corner, one block at a time.
