Jane's Walk: Wandering Woodfords
After days of rain it was great to see the sun come out for the Jane's Walk of Woodfords Corner. Former Portland Planning & Development Director (and local resident) Jeff Levine led 20 people on a morning walk of Baxter Woods, Forest Avenue, and the heart of the Corner. The group started with visiting Mayor Baxter Woods, where they learned about the Baxter family gift of 30 acres to the City of Portland. They then walked down Forest Avenue, pausing along the way to hear about development opportunities and challenges and the effort to improve bicycle parking and access. They then paused below Luminous Arbor, the Aaron Stephan sculpture that marks the heart of the neighborhood. Finally, the group looped around to Deering Avenue and ended at Big Sky Bakery for local pastries and drinks.
Jane’s Walk is a global festival of free, volunteer-led walking conversations inspired by community activist Jane Jacobs. Jane’s Walks combine the simple act of exploring a place with personal observations, local history, and civic engagement. The annual Jane’s Walk festival takes place the first weekend in May, in more than 200 cities and towns around the globe. Friends of Woodfords Corner was thrilled to participate in this year's Jane's Walk and show off our neighborhood.
