Help Us Make an Impact!

As a small but mighty volunteer-led nonprofit, we’ve made a lot of progress since our 2015 inception. In 2023, we want to add a part-time paid staff person to our team who can manage the growing amount of work required to support our burgeoning nonprofit. Our vision for Woodfords Corner remains grand. As this organization has evolved and become a Main Street America affiliate, we have more work than our small army of volunteers can accomplish. Employing a paid staff person will help us to more fully realize our goals and vision, and make a much bigger impact on the community as a whole.

Want Streetlights in the Neighborhood?

Woodfords Corner needs street-level lighting to make it safer and more walkable after dark and to make it look and feel like the village hub we want it to be. Street lighting was part of the 2018-19 MaineDOT construction project but due to cost overruns, was never installed. We want to get them installed in 2023.

The lights project is currently included in the City of Portland's 2023 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) but could easily be replaced by another project. Please help us advocate for the lights by writing an email to Acting City Manager Danielle West and all City Councilors. All the information about the lights and the email addresses of the City Councilors are here.

Your 5 minute effort will make a difference!

A Citizen's Guide to Zoning

651 Forest Avenue, 2nd floor — Tuesday, January 24th 6 - 7:30 pm

FWC is excited to share that we will be offering FREE a Zoning course, presented by board member Eric Larsson, a land use lawyer and planner.

Over three 90-minute classes starting Tuesday, January 24th at 6 - 7:30 pm, this course will include a general overview of the history, theory, and law of land use regulation, with examples to illustrate various approaches. There will also be interactive class exercises focusing on how zoning operates in Portland. Learn fun facts like the difference between a variance and a conditional use, what’s permitted in R3 and B1b, and the minimum parking requirements for a daycare and a funeral home. Learn how zoning is a critical element in issues ranging from Maine’s housing shortage to America’s obesity epidemic and global climate change. And, most importantly, learn how to be a more effective participant in local land use decisions.

Back Cove Aging in Place Initiative: New Name!

Back Cove’s Aging in Place Initiative has been a part of Portland Area Villages, Inc., a nonprofit membership organization providing services to Seniors, to assist in making it possible for them to remain in their own homes. After consulting with marketing experts, we decided to change our name to Independent Seniors Network. This change better reflects who we are and what we do. We are truly a network of volunteers that perform services to help our seniors remain independent. The services are all provided by volunteers who are vetted prior to interacting with the members. The services consist of transportation to appointments and social activities, assistance with shopping and errands, light household chores, light gardening, phone call check-ins, computer assistance, friendly visits, bringing trash to the street, and handyman assistance. We also endeavor to connect members with each other and help to combat
social isolation.

We are currently experiencing a shortage of available volunteers to provide the many services our members require. Transportation to medical appointments and grocery shopping is the greatest needs right now. If you or someone you know would be willing to join our volunteer force, please let us know. Volunteers choose what services they’d like to provide and how often they’d be willing to do so.

If you need assistance, would like to know more about us, or know of any neighbors we could help also, please contact us. For more information, our website is www.independentseniorsnetwork.org, our phone is 207-370-1896, our email is info@independentseniorsnetwork.org, or you can contact Carol Colton directly at ccolton@independentseniorsnetwork.org or 508-728-1296. We would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
