2021 Reflections & Our Impact in 2022

Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and support from neighbors from far and wide, we've been able to accomplish so much this year, including:
  • Hosting virtual lectures and candidate forums;
  • Organizing railroad and park clean-up days;
  • Installing temporary infrastructure demonstrations to make our streets safer and more accessible for all users;
  • Enhancing our sidewalks with 20 planters. We kept them green all summer long – and demonstrated sustainable practices – with the addition of two rain barrels;
  • Holding our first annual garden tour where we showcased 12 area gardens to hundreds of horticulture enthusiasts;
  • and so much more!
In 2022 we want to make an even bigger impact. Along with our usual annual and ongoing work, we plan to:
  • Install distinctive placemaking infrastructure throughout the corner, including light post banners, more planters, garbage cans, and picnic tables.
  • Make more temporary – and eventually permanent! – infrastructure updateslike the bollards and sidewalk bump-outs on Deering Ave., to make our streets safer for all users.
  • Design and create of a map and listing of Corner businesses to promote our commercial center.
  • Develop a strong, recognizable brand identity for Woodfords Corner that will help build a sense of community pride.
  • And, last but not least, hire a part-time staff person to manage FWC’s many programs and initiatives!
We aim to raise $20,000 in order to accomplish these projects in 2022, and invite you to be a part of Woodfords Corner's transformation:
make a gift today as an investment in your community!

Welcome our new Muskie Graduate Assistant

Meghan graduated from Endicott College in 2020 with a degree in Interior Design where she completed her senior thesis on the Buford Highway Corridor in Atlanta and how to encourage thoughtful, cultural, food education among the immigrant-run restaurants that line the corridor. Meghan worked in the design industry since graduating and received her LEED Green Associate credential before embarking on her graduate studies at USM in the MPPM program partnership with FWC.

FINAL CALL:
Take Our Temporary Infrastructure Survey!

This summer, we hope you've experienced the  variety of temporary infrastructure installed on Deering Ave. FWC and the Bicycle Coalition  of Maine created this demonstration with the hopes of slowing traffic through Deering Ave, one of the main streets in Woodfords Corner.

We need to hear from area residents about what they think of the temporary pedestrian- and bike-friendly updates. Take our quick survey to help us advocate for permanent changes that make the Corner safer and more welcoming to all modes of transportation!

Help an Elderly Neighbor in Need this Winter

The Age-Friendly Portland Steering Committee is looking for volunteers willing to shovel snow for an elderly neighbor this winter. Neighborhood volunteer coordinators are also needed to help match Portland residents aged 65+ with local volunteer groups and individuals willing to help.

Volunteers are asked to shovel the steps and a path from the front door to the sidewalk, as well as the sidewalk in front of the property. They are not asked to shovel the entire driveway or clear snow from roofs. The idea is to create a path which allows the senior citizen, emergency response personnel, Meals on Wheels delivery people, mail carriers, and other visitors to get in and out of the house safely. Once a volunteer receives an assignment, they agree to shovel for that same elderly resident (s) after each snowstorm.

Contact Linda Weare, Portland Office of Elder Affairs with any questions or to sign up: agefriendlycommunity@portlandmaine.gov / 207-541-6620

Healthy Workplace Pilot Recognition Program: October 15-November 15

In April 2021, a survey was distributed to Portland Downtown businesses to gauge the interest for a pilot statewide recognition program through MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence and Portland Public Health that would celebrate the efforts that local businesses make to keep spaces tobacco-free.

An overwhelming 85% of respondents shared that they believe it’s important for businesses to play a role in supporting tobacco-free spaces, and we are officially launching the pilot to thank you for these efforts. Awardees will receive branded materials to display and public recognition. Additional details can be found in the online application.

Applications for the Breathe Easy Healthy Workplace program can be submitted between October 25 - November 15, 2021. Sites can either apply directly or reach out to Kirsten Goodrich of Portland Public Health for application guidance and free resources.

Portland Area Villages: Back Cove's Aging in Place

This initiative is a part of Portland Area Villages, Inc., a nonprofit membership organization providing services to Seniors, to assist in making it possible for them to remain in their own homes.  The services are all provided by volunteers who are vetted prior to interacting with the members.  The services consist of transportation to appointments and social activities, assistance with shopping and errands, light household chores, light gardening, phone call check-ins, computer assistance, friendly visits, bringing trash to the street, and handyman assistance.  We also endeavor to connect members with each other and help to combat social isolation.

If you need assistance, would like to know more about PAV, or know of any neighbors we could help, please contact:

More volunteers and Board members would also be welcome!  Our website is www.portlandareavillages.org, our phone is 207-370-1896, our email is info@portlandareavillages.org,  or you can contact Carol Colton directly at ccolton@portlandareavillages.org or 508-728-1296.
