New Leash Policy for Baxter Woods
On Monday, October 5, the Portland City Council approved a new leash policy for Baxter Woods. The new rule requires owners to keep dogs on an 8-foot leash at all times between April 1 and July 31, to protect migratory bird nesting sites in Baxter Woods, and dogs must be on-leash between 9am–5pm August 1 through March 31.
Canine lovers can still allow their dogs off-leash between 5-9 am and from 5-10 pm during the months that will not effect the migratory birds.
The Portland Press Herald reports: “According to the city, there are several other parks in Portland where dogs can run free. They include: Evergreen Cemetery, Capisic Pond Park, University Park and Canco Woods. Two city parks are dedicated for use only by dogs and their owners. They include Quarry Run Dog Park off Ocean Avenue and the Valley Street Dog Park at the foot of the Western Promenade.” Luckily, there are many places in our fair city for our furry friends to run free!
