Coming Soon: Safer Steps Down to the Boulevard

The City of Portland is moving forward with the Back Cove Stairs Reconstruction Project along Baxter Boulevard, with improvements planned at the ends of Mackworth and Chenery Streets. The project aims to replace the deteriorating stairs with durable granite steps, new steel handrails, improved bases, and restored walkways. The work is intended to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility, and long-term stability while also protecting the surrounding environment.

A construction contract with Kamp Masonry Landscaping and Excavation was executed on August 25, 2026. Construction is expected to begin in late September or early October. The contractor will have 60 days from the start of the contract period for substantial completion, with final completion required within 90 days. The existing staircases at Codman and Hersey Streets are not part of the current project but have been identified for future removal as part of a separate project.        Details here
