Volunteers needed!

Every summer, FWC installs dozens of planters along Deering and Forest Ave to add vibrant greenery and help naturally slow traffic in our neighborhood.

Volunteers will help plant a variety of pre-purchased flowers and plants into the street-side planters. The planters are already in place, so no heavy lifting is required—just a love for gardening and community!

Help install the planters on Saturday, May 30th!

And these planters needed to get regularly watered so stay tuned for more volunteer opportunities.

First clothing swap a success!

FWC hosted it's first clothing swap last month and it was a success! We had a great turnout, and everyone left with something "new" to them. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, the event was well organized and ran smoothly. The leftover clothing was donated to Maine Needs. Clothing swaps are a great way to reduce our impact on the environment by giving our clothing a second life and they are a great way to refresh your closet in a cost effective and sustainable way!

Stay tuned for future swaps!

Earth Day Doc & Talk

Neighbors gathered together on Earth Day to watch The Nature of Oaks, a video by renowned ecologist Doug Tallamy. For those who missed the event, the video can be viewed here

Mark Reiland, City Arborist, and Kelly Corbin, an Ecological Landscape Consultant form Living Landscapes Maine were in attendance and shared their expertise about native trees. Mark provided an update about several city projects highlighting native trees, including the Co-op Tree Planting Program

Many thanks to VFW POST 6859 for use of their hall and The Nichols Fund for the financial support to make free events like this possible.

Thank you Great Portland Pick Up Volunteers!

Neighbors gathered on April 25th to help clean up Woodfords Corner as part of city-wide Great Portland Pickup. Litter was collected along sections of Forest Avenue, Deering Avenue and Woodfords Street, as well as several side streets.

A big thank you to all volunteers who dedicated their Saturday morning to make the neighborhood more green, clean & sustainable!  Thanks to the Portland Parks Conservancy and City of Portland's Sustainability Office and Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department for coordinating this impactful Earth Week event.

Thanks also to Rose Foods and Coveside Coffee for providing delicious refreshments.

Thank you Nichols Fund!

David "Dave" Nichols was a self-professed "idea man" and he brought those ideas to fruition. One of Dave's lasting ideas led to the creation of this fund to provide financial support to non-profit organizations for those activities that may not be funded through regular grants.

Thank you so much to the Nichols Fund for supporting our 'Live at Odd Fellows' event series allowing us to host holiday craft
fairs, music performaces, Doc & Talks, and other community events free to charge.
