Earth Day Doc & Talk: The Nature of Oaks
Neighbors gathered together on Earth Day to watch The Nature of Oaks, a video by renowned ecologist Doug Tallamy. The video explains why oak trees are essential for biodiversity and offers simple ways to make residential yards more supportive to wildlife. For those who missed the event, the video can be viewed here.
Mark Reiland, City Arborist, and Kelly Corbin, an Ecological Landscape Consultant form Living Landscapes Maine were in attendance and shared their expertise about native trees. The 8 oak species native to Maine were reviewed and Kelly discussed why the relatively smaller size of Bear Oaks makes them especially suitable for urban residentials plots. Mark provided an update about several city projects highlighting native trees, including the Co-op Tree Planting Program.
Attendees asked questions about tree care and tree diseases, and shared anecdotes about their favorite trees. Reference books about native trees and plants were displayed at a communal table, including the corresponding book The Nature of Oaks and local Wild Seed Project guides.
