JOIN OR DIE Sparks Conversations

In January and February, Friends of Woodfords Corner had the opportunity to host two showings of the documentary "Join or Die" at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Hall and Odd Fellows Hall. The "doc and talk" model was a hit, with over 30 guests in attendance at each screening. Viewers enjoyed popcorn and soda, contributed to a post-it note gallery wall, and reflected on the importance of community engagement through neighborly conversations during intermission and after the film.

The documentary follows the half-century narrative of the unraveling of America’s social fabric through the life and work of social scientist Robert Putnam. Known for his groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research, Putnam reveals the vital connection between community bonds and our health, happiness, economy, and politics. The film showcases groups and clubs that are actively building community in an era of increasing isolation (including one from Portland, ME!) to argue that becoming a “joiner” may be the solution to our personal and societal woes.

"Join or Die" makes a clear and urgent case for the very same community and placemaking work that is at the heart of the FWC’s mission. If you couldn't make it to a screening but are interested in learning more, the film can be accessed on Netflix. And if you are feeling inspired to join, reach out about volunteering with the Friends of Woodfords Corner!

We are grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of these screenings. Many thanks to event sponsors Maine Downtown Center, the VFW, and the Odd Fellows. The Friends of Woodfords Corner look forward to hosting more events that foster Corner connections and celebrate impactful storytelling.
