Winter Seed Sowing with Girl Scouts

The Girl Scouts of Maine, Troop 1346, joined Betsy Tesh from the Green, Clean and Sustainable Committee for a winter seed sowing workshop. The Scouts are working toward their Native Plant patch. Several different native seeds were sown, including: Spotted Bee Balm (Monarda punctata), Pussytoes (Antennaria plantaginifolia), Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), and Sundial Lupine (Lupinus perennis).

Local butterflies and moths that rely on these native host plants were also studied. The plants will be overwintered outside to undergo cold stratification and will be transferred to the native pollinator garden in Saunders Triangle next year.

Thank you to Troop 1346, and Troop leaders Maranda Richards and Juliana Roberts Dubovsky, for your volunteerism and commitment to native plants!
