FWC Spotlight:

Village Life: Economic Vitality

Board President, Teresa Valliere, tells us all about the importance of building a village in order to have a flourishing neighborhood hub.

In 2014, neighbors Eric Larsson and Andy Schmidt, and launched a Facebook group trying to raise important questions about traffic, safety, urban planning, and how the future MDOT project would have on Woodfords Corner and surrounding neighborhoods. In 2015, myself and another group of neighbors, unaware of the FB page, and annoyed by the accumulated trash, organized the first annual Railroad clean-up. We hung up posters asking for help and got the city to bring trucks to haul the trash away.  Thirty people came to the that first community event and all at once, we had energy around caring for the corner.  People who had never met before were carrying big loads of trash, laughing and sharing ideas about how to make the corner better from the ground up, not waiting for some top down changes to happen. Question of the Month: tell us what you think!

Each month we're asking one (1) question to hear from YOU! Answer the question to be entered to win a fun prize – this month, a 1lb bottle of honey sourced right in Woodfords Corner (see photo at right)!

Thank you to the 20 respondents in our January Question of the Month. Respondents feel overall variable on the issue of snow clearing sidewalks–some sections get cleared better than others. We encourage all business and property owners to maintain safely cleared sidewalks for pedestrians this winter.

February's Question:

What type of businesses would you patronize if they were located in the Corner?

Answer the question here!

Thank you, Kirk!

Our fellow board member and volunteer Kirk Jones is stepping down to volunteer and supporter level. Kirk bravely joined the board during COVID and since then has moved and had a bigger family too! Kirk helped as a volunteer on Economic Vitality and Communications committees and had fun at the Trinity Park clean-ups as well. He did some digging around to help us make connections with commercial property owners and kept his eyes on the commercial real estate changes in our hub. We’ll miss him at board level but will see him at other events and in the neighborhood. Thank you for your service, Kirk!

Thank you to our January Donors!

Thank you to Great Lost Bear & Tsunami Tattoo, once again, for your generous donations during our Year-End Appeal.

Thank you to the Hannaford Bloomin' 4 Good program for having us as the December recipient!

Lastly, thank you to Nancy Montgomery & Jack Vreeland, all of our donors who continue to support our 2022 efforts through our Year-End Appeal.

Special thanks GLB for being a Sustainer

A special thank you to Sustaining Sponsors Weslie and Dale Evans owners of Great Lost Bear. Take some time to read the PPH article about them when their restaurant marked its 40th anniversary in 2019. When FWC started asking the businesses to help us out in 2017 with small donations, Weslie immediately saw the vision and supported our mission. Even as their restaurant suffered the pressures of the pandemic, she and Dale increased their support substantially for our 2022 goals. Thank you so much Weslie and Dale!
