Successful Back to School Clothing Swap!

In August, FWC hosted a Back to School Clothing Swap for kids. The event encouraged community members to give new life to clothing they no longer wear by exchanging items with others—all completely free. Participants could donate gently used clothing, browse for new-to-them pieces, or do both. We also encouraged participants to bring backpacks and school supplies.

The need for events like this is significant. More than 100 billion garments are produced worldwide each year—about 12.5 pieces of clothing for every person on Earth. Meanwhile, U.S. landfills receive more than 11.3 million tons of textiles annually, averaging about 81.5 pounds of discarded clothing per person. A clothing swap offers a simple way to reduce waste, extend the life of our clothing, and refresh our wardrobes without spending money or increasing the demand for newly produced garments. Additionally, we were able to take any leftover clothing items to Maine Needs to ensure that our community members in need could benefit from the event, as well!

The Clothing Swap saw a wonderful turnout and many attendees expressed the need for a community space to swap kids' clothing for free, especially given how quickly children grow from one size to another.

Many families came together to participate, creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. It was inspiring to see our community embrace the idea of sharing resources and reducing waste. It was great to see even the kids get involved in shopping and picking out new-to-them items.

The excitement and positive feedback confirmed that this is something our community wants to see more of, especially with our second swap successfully hosted. Keep an eye out for our next swap, which we’re hoping to host in the Spring!

When we share what we already have, we strengthen our community, reduce waste, and remind ourselves that caring for one another and caring for the planet can go hand in hand.
