Seasonal Clothing Swaps at Odd Fellows Hall
In April, FWC hosted its first-ever Clothing Swap in celebration of Earth Day. The event encouraged community members to give new life to clothing they no longer wear by exchanging items with others—all completely free. Participants could donate gently used clothing, browse for new-to-them pieces, or do both.
The need for events like this is significant. More than 100 billion garments are produced worldwide each year—about 12.5 pieces of clothing for every person on Earth. Meanwhile, U.S. landfills receive more than 11.3 million tons of textiles annually, averaging about 81.5 pounds of discarded clothing per person. A clothing swap offers a simple way to reduce waste, extend the life of our clothing, and refresh our wardrobes without spending money or increasing the demand for newly produced garments. Additionally, we were able to take any leftover clothing items to Maine Needs to ensure that our community members in need could benefit from the event, as well!
The Clothing Swap saw a wonderful turnout, with many first-time visitors to our event space at Odd Fellows Hall in Woodfords Corner and many people experiencing a clothing swap for the first time. One of the most common questions we heard was, "How does this work?" We loved explaining that it was simple: attendees could bring clothing to share, browse what others had donated, take home whatever they needed—or simply come and shop the swap. There was no cost, no requirement to donate in order to participate, and no limit on taking what you truly needed.
People of all ages came together to participate, creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. It was inspiring to see our community embrace the idea of sharing resources and reducing waste. Several attendees expressed how grateful they were for an event like this, sharing that they were in need of clothing and appreciated having access to free, quality items.
The excitement and positive feedback confirmed that this is something our community wants to see more of. We're already planning another Clothing Swap later this year, this time with a back-to-school focus for children. While our first swap featured adult clothing, we know that children's clothing is often outgrown quickly and has plenty of life left to give. We look forward to helping families prepare for the school year while keeping more clothing in use and out of landfills.
The Back to School Children’s Clothing and School Supplies Swap will be on August 30th, 11am-1pm. Join us again at Oddfellows Hall to shop the swap. Feel free to bring by donations Saturday 8/29 2-3pm, Sunday morning 9-10am, or when you come to shop the swap!
When we share what we already have, we strengthen our community, reduce waste, and remind ourselves that caring for one another and caring for the planet can go hand in hand.
