The Woodfords Record: Digitized at Portland Public Library
PPL Special Collections Librarian and Archivist Abraham Schechter recently uncovered a community newspaper called The Woodfords Record, which chronicles “various neighborhoods north and west of downtown Portland.”. A Woodfords Corner resident himself, he digitized the short run of papers in Portland Public Library’s Digital Commons.
Abraham shares, “Essentially, during my cleaning of the PPL basement, I found The Woodfords Record newspapers and set them aside for later digitizing- first having to very, very carefully flatten the embrittled newsprint and repair many of the pages. Researching these, I found these newspapers constitute the world's only existing run of The Woodfords Record. As you see, scanning took extremely careful handling- but now everything (published only in 1950) is preserved and accessible on the Library's archival Digital Commons platform. Knowing all the streets and landmarks mentioned in the articles, as a Woodfords resident, this was really interesting to read!”
These records are now available to the public for free! You can read them here.
