USM Muskie Students Present Update to FWC Board Members
Students in the Sustainable Development Workshop at USM’s Muskie School of Public Service provided a progress update to Friends of Woodfords Corner board members this week. Two exciting projects are underway. Together the two teams aim to promote the core values of Friends of Woodfords Corner. These complementary projects emphasize the FWC goals of community engagement, purposeful design of public spaces, and local economic vitality.
One team of students is working to address strategies for improving the corridor running from Trinity Park to the southern edge of Baxter Woods. Their initial parking availability, lighting needs, and underutilized space inventories will help shape proposed strategies for creating a sense of place for all Woodfords Corner businesses, residents, and visitors. Addressing the misperception of lack of available parking, establishing community themes like lighting and art, installing wayfinding tools, and promoting historic identity can all help create a sense of place that will unify Woodfords Corner. Meanwhile the second team is developing a three-pronged approach to assisting economic development efforts in Woodfords Corner. (1) An economic feasibility study is ongoing to identify ways for improving services and amenities to Woodfords Corner citizens. (2) A portfolio of marketing and branding resources is being developed and will be offered to Woodford Corners businesses. (3) A business needs survey has been finalized to capture the views of existing and new businesses in the area. Local business owners, look out soon for an opportunity to provide your feedback to the USM team and help shape the future of Woodfords Corner! Special thanks to Professor Yusueng Kim for guiding the Sustainable Development Workshop and to Teresa Valliere for supporting this unique partnership.
